JHAYRA — Crafting Memories Into Art

Choosing wall art for an Indian living room

Which wall to start with, what size the art should be, and how to pick a style that suits the room you already have.

The living room is where most homes put their first big piece of art, and it is also where the most common mistakes happen: a frame that is too small for the wall, or a style that fights with the furniture. A few simple decisions avoid both.

Start with the wall people see first

Pick the wall you face when you walk in, or the wall behind the sofa. That one wall sets the tone; everything else can stay quiet. In open-plan homes, treat the wall behind the sofa as the living room’s “headline”.

Size it to the furniture, not the wall

Above a sofa, aim for art that spans roughly two-thirds of the sofa’s width. For a typical 7 ft (84 in) three-seater that means one 24 × 36 in piece, or a pair or trio of 12 × 18 in (A3+) frames hung as a set. A single A4 frame on a large wall almost always looks lost.

  • One large piece: 24 × 36 in above a three-seater or a long console.
  • A pair: two 18 × 24 in frames side by side, 2–3 in apart.
  • A row of three: three A3+ frames with equal gaps — easy to get right.
  • A gallery wall: one 18 × 24 in anchor with A4 and A3+ frames around it.

Match the mood of the room

Look at what is already there. Warm woods and brass suit gold or brown frames and earthy nature or devotional art. Grey, white and black interiors suit black frames with abstract or modern pieces. If your room has one strong colour — a rug, cushions, curtains — choose art that repeats it.

  • Calm and airy: nature and botanical prints.
  • Bold and contemporary: abstract and modern art.
  • Traditional and festive: devotional art, Mithila-inspired and Vastu motifs such as running horses or the lotus.
  • Personal: a family or couple frame designed with your own photos.

Hang it at eye level

Keep 8–10 inches between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the frame, and the centre of the art about 57–60 inches from the floor where there is no furniture below.
